Greenwich. Montmartre. Shoreditch. Gastown? Mislead she is not, by such a strange and peculiar name. This quaint Vancouver neighborhood is where romantics, hipsters, and curious tourists come together in a Canadian Arcadia of steam clocks, fairy lights, and civical coffee hangouts.
She starts her afternoon early and sneaks into Revolver for a Guatemalan roast, some urban flare, and music worth noting for her next soirée. Here she observes the early risers and records her ideology in a pocket journal, whist sipping in the Canuck way of life. Perhaps later she’ll slip back in or try a different cup from Nelson the Seagull, Timbertrain, or Lost + Found.
She heads down Water Street and stops inside Oak + Fort for a curated collection of uncomplicated and thoughtfully designed apparel, then a bit further east at Örling & Wu for affordable, quality, and starry-eyed home décor. And of course, a trip to Gastown wouldn’t be so without a stop inside the Old Faithful Shop, a modern general store where displayed are “trusty, well-built heirloom pieces that are classic in design and only enhanced by the passage of time.”
When lunch is on the clock and the mind, she’s torn between an aged white cheddar grilled cheese from Meat and Bread or a seasonal holistic spread inside the lusciously interiored The Birds & The Beets, whose Instagram feed also delivers daily floral and edible romance. Then she remembers Tacofino down the way and her mind is made up. She shamelessly orders more than one, does not go easy on the sauce, and photographs the witty logo before her way out.
Once the night has fallen and there is a crisp in the air, she promises herself to visit Gastown once more as a truly bewitching and enchanting atmosphere only comes out to play with the lovers and the stars above. She persuades her date for a cocktail at Bambudda and dinner at L’Abattoir, where the French influenced West Coast fare is savoured amongst “French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood finishes.” Then, an evening stroll under the fairy-lit sidewalks concludes her day’s adventures that will linger long into her dreams.
