The scene is set; the salted sea frothed upon white grained shores, honeyed melons and exotic fruits ripe from the earth, and a flourishing Shangri-La in the midst of the Pacific. Hawaii’s Big Island might not be as popular to Maui or Oahu, but perhaps it’s remoteness provides authenticity and makes her forget that civilization does exist away from it’s ruby glowing volcanoes and botanical hideaways.
With a variety of adventures ranging from helicopter aviation, Mauna Kea stargazing, and adrenaline rush surfing, her favourite happened to be submerged offshore within the evening sapphire waters of Kona. Performed by a spectacular of dazzling manta rays floating like visual effects straight from the screen, the Manta Ray Night Dive defined The Embarkiste and remains one of her greatest pleasures to this day.
Once dusk unravels, the boat departs from Kona’s shores and into the fiery sunset. She gears up and flaunts a wet suit with the appropriate dive and snorkel attachments, including the essential magic prop— a flashlight. Then once a dizzying display of stars gleam from above, it’s showtime and the dive begins.
At first, she felt timid and questionable by the 14-16 ft winged creatures. Would they be friendly? But she quickly learned that not only are they harmless, but positively playful and witty. The rule? You cannot touch them, but they can touch you— and oh, how they do! The flashlight attracts a group of small fish that the mantas feed upon, thus performing acrobatics of barrel-rolls and glides like a Cirque Du Soleil razzle-dazzle for her eyes only.
Over a dozen mantas float like heavenly creatures throughout the night waters, illuminated by underwater lights and garnished with ravishing reefs and celestial corals. Within a surreal and other-worldly moment, she is rewarded for taking a risk and investing in adventure.
Once back on shore, The Embarkiste feels forever changed by such a lyrical reverie and does not cross it off her bucket list, but simply writes it down twice. With so much to explore in Kona and the Big Island, How You Glow also provides a wonderful guide around the tropical oasis.
