Oh heavenly globes of powdered sugar, fresh cream, and melt-in-your mouth gooeyness. The Embarkiste thanks her lucky stars for the delightful gift of doughnuts and loves this sweet treat whilst embarking (though she is careful not to dangerously indulge near her nest.) Doughnuts are the new “black” with plentiful pop-ups springing up around every corner. She ponders what makes the experience so euphoric; perhaps its their candy-coated appearance, or maybe so the fluffiness awaiting inside. Whatever the magic trick, she’s mesmerized. Local word and reference sites, such as Thrillist, points her pointy heels in the direction of circular goodness.
Here, The Embarkiste shares her doughy treasures from around the globe and invites the world to share their favourites in the comment section.
Five Daughters Bakery – Nashville, Tennessee
Here the ‘100 Layer Donut’ rules all. “A delicious hybrid of a croissant and a dougnut, it takes up to three days to craft this creation.” Beginning in Franklin, Tennessee and opening up their second location in Nashville at the beginning of 2016, Five Daughter’s doughnuts are usually sold out before noon (which The Embarkiste sadly had to experience first hand.) But if she’s up and early along with the oven, the fresh Matcha Cream, Red Velvet, and Orange Blossom globes, along with many more flavours, fills her belly with happiness that was well worth the morning alarm.
District – New Orleans, Louisiana
In the land where Cafe du Monde’s beignets traps the tourists, she slips into this local hangout and indulges herself with something much more special. District offers seven rotating doughnuts everyday, compiling a catalog with over 100 creations. It almost seems far too hard a decision to make… though she must admit that, despite the tempting wedding cake doughnuts and homemade sprinkles made from Magazine Street scratch, District’s brûléed cinnamon roll is by far the best she has ever tasted in her life.
VooDoo Doughnuts – Portland, Oregon
Here, “Good things come in pink boxes.” Doughnut’s were not always owner “Cat Daddy’s” passion, but they were a fun, crazy, and wild idea. After going on a journey to master the craft, Voodoo was created in Portland’s “Keep Portland Weird” neighborhood, Old Town. With barbie pink walls, blasting metal music, 24 hour open doors, and jelly filled doughnuts shaped like voodoo dolls, this crazy hangout is a madcap, lively, and sugar-rushed experience she loved biting into!
Pasticceria Tonolo – Venice, Italy
Overshadowed by pasta and gelato, the Frittelle alla Crema is perhaps Italy’s best kept secret. Hidden within Venice’s labyrinthed canals and walkways, these palm-sized beauties are well worth the turnarounds and frustration. Warm, small, and filled with the creamiest vanilla custard that dissolves within the mouth, The Embarkiste remembers thinking this was “the best doughnut” she had ever thus eaten in her lifetime. As Venice gives romance to the eyes, the Pasticceria Tonolo gives romance to the tastebuds, and thus the soul… which is really the purpose of every doughnut, is it not?
